There has been an increase in trade in services and investment, yes.

I personally do not buy into that argument as the UK has been one of the largest investors but had not joined various parts of the economic integration.

But where does the foreign policy come into this?

I agree that there is an inevitability to some, if not most of this but I do not see any necessity for it. What is the difference between having a part in a large say and having a small say? Not a lot. In one case, you will have influence on what a grouping wants to say who may then be overruled or you can say what you want anyway but that individual voice to have less significance.
