free Trade is obsolete now though
most economic transactions between countries are not trade but investment. That is a change in the economy from 30 years ago when it was the EEC and we joined. Now it is a single market. Even Maggie supported that, but a single market is NOT a free trade zone comprising several different markets operating under different rules. And if there is to be one set of rules you need a single body to oversee their operation. That is why the EU has grown - to oversee the single market.
