politicians all really love the EU

because it is an easy scapegoat for everything and everyone. French can accuse it of being too right wing and the Tories can accuse it of being too left wing. The number of problems in Britain (for instance) cause by the EU is zero, but blaming things on Europe gives politicians a get out from having to do anything about it themselves.
