I bet most Germans in the 30s, even the ones who voted for Hitler, didn't remotely think they were "nutters and xenophobes?" Just people who "put Germany first".

The UKIP argument is one is that favoured by demagogues everywhere i.e. tell people what they want to hear, which is that their problems can be solved by the simple device kicking foreigners (or Jews - anyone, as long as it is 'someone different') who are naturally to blame.

Clearly not all Leave voters are nutters and xenophobes but a lot are (I bet all the xenophobes are Leave voters) and flirting with them, however innocently, is a very dangerous game.
