they would also want to ensure they inflicted nasty trade terms on us to dissuade others from following the same path (as, incidentally, would the Americans who also are desperate for us to stay and have no wish whatsoever to be forced to enter time-consuming trade negotiations with us separately and would view Brexit a a stab in the back of the western democratic alliance).
