well that's the point

the EU is a great defence against racists and xenophobes (that's why they all hate it so much - see the National Front and Donald Trump as examples).

Therefore if you want more socialist government framework you are MUCH better working towards it from within the EU. The EU is still only the sum of the countries that make it up, it has no real independent power of its own.
If the majority of EU governments were socialist in nature - especially the larger ones like the UK and Germany - then the EU itself would soon look a lot more socialist-friendly than it does currently.
