If actually people were a little less judgmental and intent on destroying people's lives over what are sometimes relatively minor and often innocent transgressions then I suspect he would not have panicked and felt the need to respond as he has done and might have responded along the lines that you have suggested - which i agree would have been better and diffused the situation.

There may not be a distinction between saying something racists and being racist in that moment but there is certainly a distinction between inadvertantly saying something racist and being a fundamentally racist person.
