I don't think it had to be.

What I'm taking from this is that he is guilty, that this is the tip of the iceberg, and that he's part of the problem of institutionalised racism.

Whereas, had he taken a more sympathetic, apologetic approach, I might have formed a different view.

Maybe others feel differently, I don't know.
