In my view Vaughan clearly made a gag but now feels he can't admit it as

he will be ended over it.

If you read his autobiography he talks about that specific match and how it was notable for them having 4 asian players in the team for the first time and how that was the future for Yorkshire cricket and would be good thing for them.

So I think its certainly quite plausible that he made some sort of joke about that along the lines alleged. I also don;t think that makes him a racist and feel a bit sorry for him becaause he's now going to be a victim of cancel culture and has dug himself into a bit of a hole.
