I think that's a bit of a caricature

it makes out all Isis members to be following the same, singular plan of world destruction.

But they are made up of a relatively diverse group of people all of whom have had different inputs and experiences. They are all individuals who will have their own motivation as well as some general affinity to Isis goals. Some are more radical, some less so. Some will harbour prejudices against Western Europe, some against Assad, some against their boss, some against their neighbour - all of these will lead to how they react on a personal level. The goal of Isis is vague and pretty flexibile and pragamatic at this stage.

The way to beat them is to play on these differences. To infiltrate them and to cause power divisions and splits; so that they break off into splinter groups which lack the singularity of aim and end up self destructing. Like what eventually happens to most terrorist organisations. They are no different in that respect - they are still people who can be manipulated and influenced both towards and away from extremism.
