he was lying there clutching his head, not watching the play, so I think he probably was a bit dazed after Buffon clattered him

But as you say - the ref doesn't automatically stop play every time someone is injured and if he'd been on the field he'd have been playing him onside, so it shouldn't make any difference. And it is only 3 seconds between him getting bundled off the pitch and RVN scoring, so on-one can complain that the ref should have realised that he was injured and stopped the play!
