Otherwise you are licensing defenders near the goal line to step off the pitch at the last moment to catch forwards offside (I'm sure they can pretend to be injured if necessary!).
Why should van Nistelrooy be penalised because Panucci was too slow at getting back onto the pitch where he belonged?
