If you want more say than simply voting in an election, isn't the answer to join your

preferred party / local association. Then (depending upon party rules etc), at least you should get some say in deciding who the party leader / local candidate is.

Of course, this isn't going to appeal to a great many people and by associating yourself to a party you have effectively committed your vote to them already (or do an Alaister Campbell).
