As a civil servant I always find it interesting

How Whitehall gets roped in for criticism alongside the politicians we serve.

My experience (as a scientist in a government agency) is that the old stereotypes are total bulls**t - we're a diverse bunch who are recruiting quite a lot of people who have taken a paycut from the private sector, partly out of a sense of public duty and partly for the flexible working which encourages more women to join while they raise their families.)
