I suppose it's all about degrees, Sam.
It's certainly coarse - but on balance I would posit that 'your mum' is a broad trope/gag that is used to insult the original speaker and attempts to get under the skin of what is often a male's most important relationship.
It is even suggested here that it can find its roots in Shakespeare.
