why are playing Maddison and Gunn then?

if it's all about rebuilding and planning for the future, why are we playing two players who most probably won't be around.

Not only playing them, but making one of them by far the most important player in the team, with everything going through him. Are we just going to sign another Maddison in the summer to seamlessly replace him?
