So what does it tell us...

if players cannot motivate themselves, the manager cannot motivate the players, a sports psychologist cannot motivate the players, and the fans cannot motivate the players?

All those people investing time and money into the team and they cannot put in a decent amount of effort? Yes, there SHOULD be a huge dollop of blame on the players as well.
