You can't separate the two

all season long they've been underperforming and not doing their job. There's only one person who has the (very well-paid) role of getting the best out of the players.

Therefore when he, for the umpteenth time, complains about them not doing their job, it wears more than a little thin. The clown is simply pointing out his own huge failure.
