I don;t see though how they can get a watertight backstop. They need to

accept that its not going to get through our parliament and is probably even less likely to get through if there is an election.

So its take the best that you can get or risk no deal. Or I suppose they may pin their hopes on an election bringing a peoples vote and us staying in. Hard to imagine great enthusiasm for that now after the last 3 years!
