There needs ti be a backstop/fallback (call it whatever you like) and it needs to be a worthwhile safety mechanism but insisting on it being perfect for one side only and in perpetuity is the issue.

Ultimately if there is no deal in March there is a hard border. That's the reality. If after 5 or 10 years (or whatever period you think appropriate) there is still no solution/agreement then reluctantly there will have to be a hard border but it should be solvable given a greater period of time.
