Far from it

If you looked into it you'd be as shocked at what HMRC get up to as I was. Just look at the recent employment rights case (can't remember the name offhand, tribunal level only but basically HMRC saying to its own worker pay us employee NICs but no we will not give you employment rights) for an example. Lime IT is another. The more you get into it, the more endemic it actually is.

And you can understand it. HMRC employees typically aren't paid that well and are required to hit unrealistic targets by managers who don't understand or don't care about the impact of what they're asking. So very often these cases get settled once they're contested because then the competent people get to see them and realise they've overstepped.

But for every case where someone is brave enough to stand up to HMRC, how many times will people say, well it's the Revenue what chance has little me got against them?

It's bullying, plain and simple.

I also think taxes need to be higher and much, much simpler. I've never used anyone but the NHS for my family's health and my kids all go/went to state schools: my personal interests are very strongly that's what's due is paid. But that's all by the by :)
