Is it a divorce or an amputation?

Those were a couple of analogies I heard. Of course they only simplify the matter, but they have a little validity.

The divorce one - everyone says it's going to be amicable and they'll stay friends, but how many divorces end up like that? How many favours do ex-partners generally do for each other?

Amputation is a little more obvious. Thing is; are we the limb or the body?
