he had a similar budget to Lambert so lambert had an equal chace to improve. Unless you're suggesting Lambert had a much better squad to begin with and so it was harder to improve - but that basically gives him even less excuse.

I'm pretty certain Hughton's team actually was considerably better than Lambert's Prem team - trouble is, with the big new TV deal coming in in the meantime everybody else's team was better too. Put Hughton's team from last season against the 2011/12 Prem opposition and I'm confident they'd have stayed up comfortably.
