The thrust of his argument (excuse the pun) is that men cannot control themselves and that women should understand that.

It may come as a surprise to you (and I am not making any reference to the aforementioned case here) that a woman can actually change her mind at any time, or inadvertently give a misleading impression of what is to follow and, on that basis, a man, although possibly frustrated, is wise to respect that.
