that there nexus 7 tablet thingummy

i was listening to a geek on the wireless and he reckons that i would be better off getting a "nexus 7" tablet thingummy rather than an ipad. i understood that bit because he explained that basically unless you really really needed an ipad specific app then the nexus 7 was equally as good and at a much better price. so far so good. unless he got that wrong of course. this can happen i know. anyway, the bit i'm confused about is, do i need either? what are they exactly used for? are they useful? anyone got one? will i find it indispensable after i've got it. he seemed to think i need one though. nice chap.
