The laws are totally different here in the USA so you can't compare the two situations. Home invasions nearly always involve the criminals using weapons and they are more than willing to use them. Here we have the right to use lethal force when dealing with a home invasion which threatens life or property, in the UK you have to rely on the police and the courts.

There is no 'right' way.
