But its not just religious schools is it?
As I understand it anyone can apply to run a free school provided they meet certain criteria so i presume free schools are being set up by people who believe in all sorts of different syles and type of education.
As for the costs i don't know the spevcifics of it but read an article by Toby Young last week that saud that the cost to the government of subsidising a new free school is about a quarter of the cost of seeting up a new state school so its actually a cheaper way of increasing the number of state funded schools which we clealy need given the rising population and the apparent inability of any government in recent times to curb immigration.
I don't agree with everything this government does but personally i think free schools is one of their better ideas. Of course one would hope that it would not be necessary at all for people to have to set up their own schools but we are where we are.
