Two things to avoid 1) HTC 2) Windows Phone 7.5. Because

1) HTC are s**t
2) Windows Phone 8 is rumoured not to run on the existing Windows 7.5 handsets, so although it isn't a bad operating system, you should wait until 8 because of the otherwise short lifetime.
