PC Tech question.......

My new laptop died recently, the harddrive went tits up. They have sent me a new one and I have reinstalled Windows, so basically have a new laptop again.

It's using Windows 7 and I have heard that this automatically sets up a restore point, is this true? I recently bought a 2TB external harddrive so that I can back up everything and keep all restore points etc separate - how do I do this, or do I even need to do this?
