A home computer can work very well as web server but...

The main problem is getting a good internet connection.

Home broadband has very limited upload bandwidth which would make hosting a popular site difficult on a standard ADSL connection.

SDSL offers better upload bandwidth but is prohibitively expensive when compared to an entry level hosted server.

If you want good quality and affordable hosting then a virtual server from a reputable provider can be a good option.
