There are extremists in all forms, but they are always (in modern times) out weighed by the massive majority who gain from it.

Religion is like anything else, there will always be the bad few who abuse those powers, and they are all we ever hear about.
We never see the news about a priest who has served his parish for 20 years and provided vital emotional and spritual support to people grieving, and helped them get their lives back on track for example.
Yet this kind of service happens everyday all over the country.
You never hear about hte older people, the widows and widowers who, through the church, get a sense of community sadly lacking in 'everyday' life. Who get a purpose and involvement again through their faith and church community.
