The boo boys
Wasn't at the game, but it sounds like those Huckerby and Cullum chants were in evidence again. Here's the thing: the club has had since May to sign a striker, and has failed; and the last four seasons have been very poor. Last season, lest we forget, we finished in our lowest position since 1960!
People wouldn't be complaining if we'd made the signings we needed, and if the board hadn't so utterly run out of ideas and real vision for the future. You don't have to be a Cullum fan to think this: Roeder got the board out of jail last season, but with our attendances, and actually, most of our post-1959 history, where we've been over the past few years is totally unacceptable.
When a club like Ipswich hits a sticky spell on and off the pitch, why are they able to recover so much more swiftly than ourselves? And by this, I mean the pre-Evans period: before he appeared on the scene, how much did Magilton spend to assemble a play-off challenging side? When the fans see clubs like Hull, Stoke, or Bristol City doing well, while we confirm another lower mid-table finish, how are they supposed to react? "Never mind - it's dog eat dog out there, but at least we have a board whose heart is in the right place"?
And yes, we do - but their preoccupation with real estate has left us in a position whereby most of the ST money goes to paying off the loan for the Jarrold Stand. As a result, we are hamstrung before the start of any season: and that's the board's responsibility. Did they really try their damndest to reach a solution with Cullum? Or has the securitisation left us in a position whereby it's almost impossible for a benefactor to come forward anyway?
Bottom line: I continue to be startled by how much goodwill the board still enjoys. Sure, it's early days yet - but the frustration stems from the failures of the last few years, and if there's no real sign of things changing, people have a right to get angry and call for change.
