If he is still in his probationary period he hasn't got much chance of any compo.
They have said it is due to business constraints which is a vague and wide reaching statement and can be related to the general economic climate, basically they can say he was laid off due to worries over profitability going forward etc etc and make no mention of his illness.
Tesco will be watertight legally so tough on your mate unfortunately.
