Even given the conditions you outline, injuries or bad luck could wreck our chances. Indeed the player himself could get a bad injury and never be offered such an opportunity again. Football is a fickle business and if it were my job I'm afraid I'd probably do the same as Etuhu. Take the chance when it comes along.
