did he sign Earnshaw? Why not sign Howard, or Hulse, or Parkin - he would still have had Leon, McVeigh, Hucks or Hendo to play off the big man. The signing of Earnshaw only makes sense if we intended to modify our style of play to accomodate him. Worthington must have been aware then, as he is now, that having bought Earnie there wasn't enough money left to buy a decent target man.
