I’m not

We’re not failing totally, but mistakes were made. We lost to a better, more experienced, less injured team on their home turf. This should not have been unexpected. I hoped we’d do better, but you don’t throw the baby out with the bath water. It’s not a case of starting over, but learn from the mistakes.

Some of the players might not be good enough. Smith is one, I thought that against India, despite the odd good innings. Jacks also. Maybe Pope is past his prime or needs a rest. Duckett is clearly knackered. What’s happened to the spinners? Sadly Wood and Archer can’t, or shouldn’t, push their bodies any further.

On the plus side, there’s Bethell. Carse and Tongue take wickets. Stokes is still going, but needs a rest. Root and Brook score runs. Crawley too, despite recent travails, is too good to leave out. He scored runs this series that most didn’t, including the Australians.

As for Manning, he was very clearly in the wrong place for us and him. The situation is not comparable.
