Perhaps the obvious answer is the correct one.

Our squad depth is crap and we don't have anyone to bring off the bench that can positively impact the game?

How many games have there been where the balance of play has really fundamentally changed in the second half? There's been plenty of games where the opposition have been on top without being ahead, and then have just carried that on in the second half and eventually scored.
