Why do you keep mentioning sports betting. How many times do I have to say that the

purpose of these metrics is not to predict the future.

You also say league position tells you all you need to know but then mention goals for and against. You’ve just proved my point.

League position tells you where you are, not why. To improve, you need metrics that dig into the underlying factors driving performance.

Here’s a simple example using a system analysis method called Goal–Question–Metric (GQM):

Goal: Improve attacking effectiveness.

Potential Questions:
1. Are we creating enough quality chances?
2. Are we converting them efficiently?
3. Which patterns (build-up, transitions, set pieces) create the most?
4. Are we losing possession too early?
5. How do we compare to top teams?

For each question, define a metric, track it over time, spot trends (e.g., if xG is steady but conversion drops, focus on finishing drills or shot selection), make changes, and see if performance improves.

The difference is perspective, you’re looking through a sports betting lens focused on prediction. Clubs use metrics for performance management to measure, adapt, and improve.
