Sacking Farke on that Saturday night (a win) indicated a new appointment was imminent or at least expected.
Whether that was F Frank or whoever we may never know (I wonder if Chris Wilder was in the frame, he seemed to get appointed by Boro pretty rapidly over the next 12 hours).
Smith was still in a job when this was happening, I’d say his appointment was more akin to buying Christmas presents from the app night garage on Christmas Eve
