Is the model not working because it's the wrong model full stop, or because we're not recruiting good enough raw talent, or because we can't develop players efficiently enough, or because we can't afford the quality of raw talent that we need in order to generate the level of profit we need.

The problem I have with saying the model is broken is that we have relatively recent experience to suggest that it can work - eg Maddison, Godfrey - and clearly other clubs can manage it even at the non Chelsea-level.

I'd be looking at the individual steps in the sausage machine to identify why we're getting chipolatas instead of good old bangers.
