As I observed elsewhere, in my humble opinion

the moment Russian troops start dying from weapons held in the hands of any nation traditionally considered an enemy of Russia, it risks turning more support his way in Russia itself.

Then he can start cracking down harder on dissent and the game changes completely.

Right now he's between a rock and a hard place and very vulnerable.

Obviously, again, these are only my thoughts from the comfort my armchair.
