The other thing that strikes me from my armchair is

that the moment any other historical 'enemy' of Russia gets involved in killing Russian troops risks getting Putin support from within Russia.

At the moment it appears his actions are less than popular in Russia, and that's where the best outcome to this horrible situation lies.
