All good advice here already
From a personal viewpoint I'd reckon you'd be better investing in funds via HL or vanguard or AJ Bell. HL has a large amount of info, available regardless of whether or not you're with them, browse to your heart's content to get ideas.
The reason I say funds is, with the smaller amounts of money you mention, you can still spread the risk around within a theme. The fees tend to be (a lot) lower.
