I'm not sure I quite agree with what you've said there, but I might just be misunderstanding; actor is the role. The argument is that there's no need to have a sub-category for women because actor is and always has been a gender neutral word to describe someone that is in the business of acting.

Through common usage, and because all actors were men when acting began, it became implicit that an actor was a man and therefore actress was used to differentiate. But there's actually no need.

I think the perception is that it's offensive in the same way that "female doctor", "male nurse" or "female pilot" is offensive. Maybe you don't think the use of gender descriptors in there is offensive, but you know what I mean!

I think we're probably saying the same thing actually!
