I don't think the point is to prevent anyone being 'offended'

It's more about the equalisation of the role and to remove disparity. Actor and Actress is the role however there's arguably a historic perception that actress is a lesser role than actor and therefore reflected in renumeration etc.

I could be wrong about this, I normally am.
