I don’t really agree it’s a technicality

It’s just the law and two different crimes.

I do agree though that in the circumstances, there shouldn’t be a material difference between the sentence for a crime which had the intention of killing someone, and the sentence for a crime which was so reckless it had the inevitable consequence of killing someone.

From a bit of googling, the maximum sentence offence of unlawful act manslaughter is life with a prison range from 1 to 24 years.

I hope they’ll fall in the highest level of culpability category that comes with a prison sentence of 11 - 24 years, with the starting point being 18 years.

I guess there is likely to be differentiation between the driver of the car and the passengers.

I’d be astonished if the prison sentence isn’t at the top end of the possible sentence available given this was a policeman that was killed (one of the aggravating factors).
