A reasonable level of cases is probably useful come next winter

It builds up the community immunity needed to stop it repeatedly coming back before a vaccine can be developed. China has reduced cases by stopping people interacting. As soon as life returns to normal it will come back. We need to slow it down, protect vulnerable people,but given it's easily spread, allow enough people to catch it to develop sufficient community immunity to stop it coming back strongly next winter. Hopefully come winter 21/22 a vaccine will be available.
