In hindsight, the course of action which he took was excessive....in the 'heat of the moment' however I can understand why he did what he did. Still, he will need to face the consequences.

Also, I'm not sure that I buy the argument that he was concerned that the protester may have been armed - sounds more like something his advisers have told him to say after the event.
