that beer was in a bottle or a plastic cup as you seem to assume.

It may have been deliberate/antagonistic or it may have been misinterpreted but that seems to have been the spark for the incident. Several England fans out there have indicated that it was not thrown in celebration.

Personally I don't understand this new craze of throwing beer in the air, waste of perfectly good beer and I would be f**ked off if some t**t soaked me with lager to be honest.

Does not mean violence in response is justified.
