To be honest its inevitable that when we play in destinations such as this, in
the summer and with lots of cheap flights available that there is likely to be a few issues just because of the sheer number of people going out there and the holiday atmosphere. It doesn't happen any more when England are playing qualifiers generally and certainly not in less accessible locations. It doesn;t take a genius to work out that a certain type of fan will be attracted by our fixtures in Amsterdam, Portugal and later in the year Prague, especially as it seems tickets have been quite easy to come by as well.
I think what happened last night has been overhyped as usual and what you tend to get is the classic situation of England fans get boisterous, police overreact and baton charge them, media film people running all over the place. It all looks a lot worse than it actually is and becomes a bit self fulfilling. Its been interesting that in recent years in a lot of places the police have adopted much more stand offish and we have had way less problems than we used to.
By the same token it also seems that a younger generation of fans coming through can't hold their beer and tend to make t*ts of themselves when abroad. I love watching football abroad and having a couple of days on the beers but I've never really understood the attraction of standing in the same square, singing for 8 hours in the blazing sun. I would head to some bars more off the beaten track myself which is what I guess most of the other 20,000 fans out there have done!
